A properly-tensioned wheel is stronger and stays true longer. A tension meter, while not strictly necessary, can be a valuable tool to find spokes that are either too tight or too loose. A wheel built without one can come out out pretty good. But it’s nice to have that tension data. This is the same meter. we use for our builds. We like it because it’s affordable, durable, and gives consistent readings between spokes. The difference between it and other more well known brands has to do with the tension spring, which may not be as accurate against tension charts. If you are a pro-wheel builder, you may want something with more reliable calibration. What does work well is it allows a builder to accurately compare the spokes to each other during the build process and the final tension check.
Here’s a tip: find a similar wheel that has already been built and compare the tension of that wheel to your build.
